How to convert an M4A file to MP3

  1. Add your files. Drag them into the area above, or click to select them. On iPhone, tap "Browse" then "Voice Memos" or "Files".
  2. Choose the format and quality. MP3 is selected by default, at 192 kbps. Pick 320 for demanding music, 128 for voice.
  3. Click "Convert". The first run loads the engine (10 MB, one time only). Conversion takes a few seconds per file.
  4. Download. A single file downloads automatically; multiple files can be grabbed as one .zip.

M4A or MP3: which should you choose?

M4A (AAC) offers better quality than MP3 at the same bitrate, and it is the native format of the iPhone, iTunes and Apple voice memos. MP3 is less efficient, but it plays on absolutely everything: car stereos, portable players, TVs, old PCs, editing software, websites. If your file needs to be played anywhere other than an Apple device, MP3 remains the safe choice. That is exactly what this site is for.

💡 Tip: if your M4A contains ALAC (lossless, rare), convert it to FLAC instead to lose nothing, or to MP3 320 kbps for compatibility.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really free?

Yes, completely. No sign-up, no file limit, no watermark, no crippled "Pro" version. The site is funded by unobtrusive advertising.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs directly in your browser thanks to FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Your files stay on your device. Only very old browsers that do not support this technology fall back to server-side conversion, with automatic deletion within 30 minutes.

Which quality should I choose for MP3?

192 kbps is an excellent compromise for music (indistinguishable from the original for most ears). 320 kbps for maximum quality, 128 kbps for voice (podcasts, memos, lectures). Converting a compressed file to a higher bitrate never improves the sound: it only increases the file size.

Can I convert several files at once?

Yes. Drop as many files as you want; they are converted one after another and you can download everything as a single .zip file.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, in Safari, Chrome or Firefox mobile. Conversion is a bit slower than on a computer and the first load of the engine needs a decent connection (about 10 MB, then cached).

Are tags (title, artist, cover art) preserved?

Yes, by default. Metadata is copied into the converted file whenever the destination format supports it (MP3, M4A, FLAC, OGG, OPUS). You can uncheck the option to strip it.
