Convert an iPhone Voice Memo to MP3 (Free, No App Needed)
Updated on 01/10/2026
The iPhone's Voice Memos app records in M4A, an Apple format that many devices and applications reject: car stereo, older Windows player, transcription tool, podcast platform, file attachments on some websites. MP3 solves the problem in 1 minute.
Method 1: directly on the iPhone, in Safari
- In Voice Memos, open the recording, tap ⋯ then Save to Files. Choose a folder (e.g. "Downloads").
- Open the convert M4A to MP3 page in Safari.
- Tap the drop area, then Browse, and select the memo in Files.
- Tap Convert to MP3. For voice, 128 kbps is enough and gives a file half the size.
- The MP3 is saved in Files › Downloads. You can share it from there.
Method 2: on a Mac or PC
Transfer the memo via AirDrop, iCloud Drive or by sharing it to yourself by email, then drop it on the conversion page. On a Mac, the .m4a file is also available in ~/Library/Group Containers/group.com.apple.VoiceMemos.shared/Recordings if you would rather skip the export.
Several memos at once
Select all the files in one go: they are converted one after another and the "Download all" button creates a .zip. Handy for archiving a semester of lectures or a series of interviews.
What about transcribing the memo?
Most transcription tools (Whisper, Google Docs voice typing, Word) prefer MP3 or WAV. For Whisper running locally, 16 kHz mono WAV is ideal, but MP3 works very well.
