Convert a WhatsApp Voice Message (.opus) to MP3
Updated on 01/10/2026
WhatsApp saves voice messages in the Opus format (.opus extension, sometimes .ogg or .aac on iPhone). It is an excellent codec, but poorly recognized: Windows Media Player, most car stereos and many editing applications refuse to open it. As MP3, it plays everywhere and can be attached to an email or added to a file.
Step 1: export the voice note from WhatsApp
- Android: long-press the message › Share (or ⋮ › Share) › save it to Files or send it to Google Drive. Voice notes are also stored in
Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Voice Notes/. - iPhone: long-press › Forward › share icon › Save to Files.
- WhatsApp Web / Desktop: hover over the message › arrow › Download.
Step 2: convert to MP3
Open convert OPUS to MP3, drop the file (or every file from a conversation), and click Convert. The site also recognizes voice notes in .ogg and .aac.
Why not just rename it to .mp3?
Renaming the extension does not change the file's contents: a strict player will still refuse to open it, and VLC would have opened it anyway. The only reliable solution is a real re-encode, which is what this site does.
Keeping it as evidence (legal context)
If the voice note may serve as evidence, be sure to keep the original .opus file intact alongside the MP3 version: conversion alters the file and could be challenged. Note the date and the sender.
